Virtual Trad Immersion Camp (9-12 years)

A fun intensive Irish music workshop!

Spend Saturday & Sunday mornings with other young musicians who are eager to learn more Irish traditional music. If you already play some Irish tunes, or if you play an instrument that suits Irish music (like whistle, fiddle, flute, mandolin, banjo, concertina, accordion), join fiddler and violin teacher Mary Vanorny for this fun, virtual Irish music camp. Singer & harpist, Hannah Flowers will teach a song and lead other musical activities.

The program is a condensed, introductory version of the intermediate-advanced teen program. Students will learn a song and two tunes. Open to melody players who know five to ten Irish tunes. Music will be taught by ear, with sheet music and recordings for at-home support. Learning materials (video recordings & sheet music) will be provided in advance of the program.

Trad Camp students and families are encouraged to attend the Virtual Great Session Experience on Friday evening. If safe and weather-permitting, we will offer an in-person youth session that evening from 6-7pm.

Adult Program – Workshops, Lectures, & Events

Music Workshops
The Minnesota Irish Weekend @ Home offers a selection of workshops, lectures, and fascinating interviews with the visiting artists.  There is something for everyone, musicians and non-musicians alike. Instrument-specific workshops with the visiting artists are available throughout the weekend on whistle, flute, concertina, fiddle, banjo, accordion, and song. General tune-playing workshops for all melody players are also available with most of the visiting artists this year.

What to Expect
All MIM @ Home adult workshops, interviews & lectures, will be delivered over Zoom. Due to the relatively short workshop length (60 minutes), workshops will be conducted in lecture format with participants muted, but with the capability to play along with the instructor. Instructors will decide how to conduct the workshops, and how/whether to incorporate interactive elements such as playing/practicing along, using the chat function, live question & answer etc. Online classrooms will open 15 minutes ahead of each workshop. Workshops will begin at scheduled time. We recommend logging on early to settle in and say hello to other participants! A volunteer host will be available to let students into the classroom before and during the workshops.

Adult workshops will be recorded by CIM hosts and made available for registered MIM @ Home participants to stream until the end of July (it may take us a week to get these videos uploaded and available). Any additional materials from visiting artists (pdf’s, audio recordings etc) will be available via Dropbox until the end of July. Saturday Only and Sunday Only students will have access to videos from the day they were registered.
