We will talk to Billy about his life in music as performer with the Irish Tradition, The Green Fields of America, Trian and The Pride of New York and as a teacher and one the main creators of the traditional Irish music scene on the east coast of the United States. Dáithí Sproule looks forward to a visit with his old friend in front of an audience.

Learn your first few songs in Irish Gaelic.  Dáithí will go through pronunciation in detail and introduce you to the singing in the beautiful native Irish language.  Note: change of instructor.  Visiting artist Sheila Shigley was going to teach this workshop, but she is not able to attend MIM this year.

3:10-4:30 Danielle Enblom Origins of Irish Dance, Irish Influence on Dance in America and How Music Played a Role Lecture All welcome! The evolution of Irish music and Irish dance is made up of a rich tapestry woven with threads of passing time, cultural shifts, and national events. Join dancer, musician and ethnochoreologist, Danielle Enblom, as she gives a lecture/demonstration on how Irish dance traditions influenced American dance in the early 20th century. Danielle will provide historical and cultural context for this fascinating era while touching on interesting topics such as vaudeville, american tap dance, An Coimissiún, ceili bands as well as Irish nationalism and assimilation. Look forward to live demonstrations, an opportunity for Q & A and audience input.

9:30-10:50 Danielle Enblom Intro to Dance for Musicians Dance all levels Come learn basic steps from various Irish dance traditions from dancer, musician and ethnochoreologist, Danielle Enblom.  This dance workshop designed specifically for musicians will highlight the relationships between music and dance, and build a greater understanding of Irish rhythms in your body!

11:10-12:30 Brian Conway Sligo Tunes from Brian Conway All Instruments int - adv Brian is a leading exponent of the highly ornamented Sligo fiddling style made famous by the late Michael Coleman and passed on to him by legendary Martin Wynne and fiddle great Andy McGann.  All instrument players are welcome to attend this workshop to learn more about this core body of Irish tunes.

Button Accordion int - adv Billy is the protege of the late accordion player, Sean McGlynn from Tynagh, County Galway.  In this workshop, Billy will talk about Sean, his approach to music through teaching some of the tunes he learned directly from him.

1:30-2:50 Brendan Dolan Ceili Band Piano Playing 1 Piano int - adv Son of pianist Felix Dolan, one of the most respected and inventive keyboardists in Irish music today says, "Piano accompaniment can sound very different depending on the context.  The piano plays a central driving role in ceili band music; along with the drums, it is the glue that keeps the band together."  This class will focus on this very specific style.  Other styles will also be referenced in comparison.
1:30-2:50 Norah Rendell Sean Nos Songs in English, Repertoire & Vocal Ornamentation Song all levels Norah will share some of her Irish traditional repertoire while unlocking some of the mysteries of ornamentation and tone production that often characterize traditional "sean nos" (old style) Irish singing. Visiting artist Sheila Shigley was going to teach this workshop, but she is not able to attend MIM this year.

Brian Conway and Sligo Irish Fiddle in the United States Interview All welcome! During this conversation, Dáithí will speak with Brian about his experience and thoughts on the development of Irish fiddling in America. Brian stands in direct line of descent through the great Andy McGann and Martin Wynne back to Michael Coleman and the Sligo fiddle masters and has devoted his musical career to his vision of their tradition and its development.
