3rd Annual Young Irish Musicians Weekend

June 19–21, 2009—St Paul, MN.

Young Irish Music Weekend 08

Welcome to the Young Irish Musicians Weekend!  This is our second year and classes, hooleys, and concerts will all happen at McNally-Smith College of Music in downtown St Paul.  We are bringing in some fantastic, internationally renowned musicians to perform & teach including Liz Carroll, Dermot Diamond, Tara Bingham-Diamond, Tommy Martin and Daithi Sproule.  This event is unique across all of North America in its focus on our next generation of musicians.

INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED YOUTH COURSES

These courses are specifically designed for youth under age 25 who are already playing instruments and perhaps are already playing Irish music.  Fiddlers, Fluters, Pipers, Singers, Guitarists and Tin Whistlers have the opportunity to learn from amazing instructors in very small class sizes.  We welcome students of other instruments too and will accommodate to the best of our abilities all students who are interested in participating.

BEGINNER YOUTH COURSES

New this year!  We have a special course designed just for beginners!  The beginner’s course will introduce beginning, curious students to a wide range of Irish instruments.  This will be Hands-On fun!  Learn a tune or two on a pennywhistle, a song in Irish and English, try a fiddle, bodhran, harp, accordion and more!  Students in the beginner course will also have fun learning some simple Irish dancing and trying a creative project.  Suitable for students entering grade 2 to grade 8.

ADULT STUDENT PROGRAMMING IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE YIM!

New this year!  We have designed special programming for the adult musicians in our community.  Intermediate and advanced musicians of all genres are invited to take courses with the Young Musicians Weekend Master Artists.  This is your opportunity to get expert, authentic instruction without having to leave the state!

RECEPTION (HOOLEY!) & CONCERT

The public is very welcome, indeed, encouraged, to attend the Friday night Hooley/Reception and the Saturday night Master Artist Concert.

This activity is made possible, in part, by funds provided by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC) from an appropriation by the Minnesota Legislature. Funding also provided by the Irish Fair of Minnesota, Legacy Fund. Thank you.
