Workshops
Workshop: Tin Whistle with Nicolas Brown - (Level: Beginner to early Intermediate)
11:00pm-12:15pm
Price: $30
This workshop will focus on learning the fundamentals of whistle playing, including fingering, beginning breath control, phrasing, rhythm and some simple ornamentation. Please bring a tin whistle in the key of D and a recording device.
Workshop: Uilleann Pipes with Nicolas Brown - (Level: Intermediate to Advanced)
12:30pm-1:45pm
Price: $30
This workshop will cover more advanced uilleann pipe techniques, including discussions of “tight” and “open” piping, ornamentation, and strategies for introducing breath and bow-like phrasing. Please bring a recording device.
Lecture: Oscar & Malvina
One of the first stage performances of the instrument that became the uilleann pipes was to provide background music for the Ballet Pantomime “Oscar and Malvina”, a play based on the (fake) Scottish mythology from the Ossian cycle of epic poetry. This lecture will cover the music played or playable on the Irish or uilleann pipes, and draw parallels with modern practice in both traditional and commercial music. Braveheart wasn’t the first time Irish pipes were used instead of Scottish pipes!
